Blogger's Quilt Festival :: My First Quilt

If you're here from Blogger's Quilt Festival, welcome! Thanks for stopping by!

This is my very first quilt, completed a little over a year ago. On a whim, I decided to take a beginner's quilt class at my LQS, and conned a friend into joining me. When I saw one of the sample quilts for another class at orientation, I just knew I had to make something from that same fabric....it was Nicey Jane by Heather Bailey and I was instantly head over heels!

My First Quilt
I went back to the store on a quieter day to pick out my fabrics. I knew it was Nicey Jane, and if you know me at all, it had to be pink. I auditioned a number of prints, using the teacher's tip of lining up the spines of the bolts together to see how they'd come together as the rails on the rail fence design. I settled on a combination, but had to break up all the color. It took a lot of convincing, but I went with this patterned cream color they had in the shop.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was when it was finally pieced together and I saw it all laid out. I did a major clappy-clap happy dance, along with a little jumping up and down.

My First Quilt - back
This is one of my favorite prints from the whole line. So pink, pretty and girly. Totally me.

My First Quilt - quilting
This is the minor tragedy of it all...the yellow Chaco liner never washed out completely, so there it is, looming under my lime green thread. I was upset at first, but have gotten over it.
Any suggestions for colored markers that wash out? Or should I just stick with painter's tape?

  1. This is your first quilt? I don't believe you. I love how the back compliments the front. Very nice.

  2. Lovely quilt, I love the colors too. I have had great success with the Clover's wash out blue markers and I also used Crayola's washout markers. Can't wait to see your next quilt.

  5. Beautiful pink and green quilt! I would never have known there was chaco liner under the thread. The blue water soluble pens work well but aren't efficient for doing a lot of marking.

  6. I love Nicey Jane, too. I have made 2 quilts with it....but looking at this, maybe I need one more?? So pretty, and an amazing first quilt! As for the yellow...no tips to get it out, but I tend to use the fast fade ones that are blue/purple and they come out easily.

  8. Great quilt with lovely colors and fabrics. Thankfully the yellow marker blends in well with the green. I don't know anything about marking. Not too noticeable, so that's good. Thanks for sharing and have a great day

  14. This is an amazing first quilt!!!
Great job! Gotta love Nicey Jane too!
I use a karisma pencil for small markings but if its for quilting lines, go with painters tape.
    Good luck!

  16. This is your FIRST quilt? Wow - you've got lots of fun and creativity ahead of you! It's beautiful! Darn shame about the marking....did you try Oxy Clean? Or Grandma's Own Spot Remover, you can get that at quilt shops. I always use a blue washout marking pen...I just spritz it with water when I'm done, and it goes away. It's not failed me yet!

  17. Like Allie sad I would try the Grandma's Own Spot Remover--works very well for me!

I love that print on the back as well and have it in my stash. Pretty, pretty!!

You did a terrific job on her!

  18. It's a beautiful quilt and I didn't even notice the yellow line until you said something! I had a quilt that didn't have an orange chalk wash out in some places. It was for my daughter so she didn't care but I've never used orange again. Now I wonder if it's just that part of the color wheel.

I stick to white chalk or a really light blue marker or sometimes I use a paper template and just tear it off when I'm done.

  19. Gorgeous quilt and I never would have noticed the stray ink. Make sure you don't iron over disappearing ink marks because that will set them in.

  21. This quilt is so cute! I gotta be honest, I'm not in love with nicey jane, but I love it in this quilt! I love that you put the dark green in the center...at first glance I didn't even know it was a fence rail! Sad about the chaco liner...maybe it will come out after a few washes...I once chalked a white quilt with blue miracle chalk and it took 3 washes to get it all out. You could try a lint brush next time before washing, usually that works pretty well to remove chalk too.

  22. What an amazing first quilt! I love how you used the colors together. I've used hairspray to get some of the "disappearing" inks out... since I forgot and ironed over them before washing. I don't know if it's great for your quilt, since I'm no expert, but it does work. Just spray it on and use a toothbrush (that you won't be using in your mouth, of course) to rub it in, then wash.
